“When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.” -Wayne Dyer
Notes from May, Week 2, 2016
Second and fourth sat in a circle at Barnes and Noble and critiqued each other’s work. But even more interesting was “Captain America: Civil War.” Have you seen it? It was fantastic! I saw it twice and I highly recommend everyone go see it. Funny, we don’t have any comic book writers in this group. That’s a shame. I guess. I don’t read comic books; I just watch the movie versions of them. Not even sure if it’s that one word or two separate ones. “Deadpool” was pretty great, too. It’s available on DVD and Blue-Ray.
Other Odds and Ends
Hey, here’s a great read on great opening lines. I highly recommend this read. Thanks, Pat.

From one of our TWS alums . . .
Jaime Nelson: The biggest news in the last year is that I got married. It was at Olbrich Botanical Gardens on the east side of Madison. Some of you may know it. My grandmother volunteered there all the way up to her death at age 90, so if she couldn’t attend the wedding in person, at least she could be there in spirit.
In the end, the wedding day was perfect despite that they told us there were no chairs for the attendees, that they weren’t going to allow the caterer in the building, and a surprise rehearsal dinner.
I’m now happily married to a Chicagoan – David – who fixes New York City subway trains and rescues trapped civilians from trains that break down on the tracks. We live in Sugar Hill (or Hamilton Heights, as the real estate brokers call it in effort to gentrify) in Manhattan with David’s seven-year-old son, Milo.
At the moment, I’m doing the hotshot publicist thing. I work for Princeton Architectural Press where I am currently promoting a book about a man who turned himself into a goat. Seriously, look it up, it’s a real thing. If I’m any good at my job, youll hear about GoatMan on NPR or in The New Yorker.
On the side, I run Anglonerd.com, the geekiest guide to British entertainment, geared toward Americans. I blog a couple times a week and illustrate the articles (and am happy to take guest posts, if that’s your thing!).
Lastly, I am, as always, working on a novel. This one takes place in the New York City comedy scene in a world without death. It doesn’t have a title yet. Maybe I’ll actually finish the novel one of these days.
Anyway, please here’s my email address, anglonerd@gmail.com, if you’d like to get in touch. I would love to hear what everybody is up to.
Best wishes,
Jaime Nelson Noven
Fifth Tuesday May, 31
Here it is from our hosts, the second-an-fourth group . . .
Date: May 31. Meet at our usual time of 7 p.m.
Place: The Goodman Community Center at 149 Waubesa Street here in Madison. Here’s the link to the center’s website: http://www.goodmancenter.org/
This is a potluck dinner event, so please bring a dish to pass.
Goodman is charging us a small fee (less than $50) for the use of the meeting room, so bring a couple dollars to throw in the kitty to cover the charge.
The writing challenge: In 250 to 500 words, write about a job interview that goes horribly wrong. You can write from the point of view of the interviewer, the interviewee, or a third party (the proverbial fly on the wall). The catch? You must use as many of the following words as you can (and we’ll tell you what the Japanese word means after you write your piece):
Ineffable
Vermicelli
Slippery
Defenestrate
Matte
Onomatopoeiarhododendron
Gastrointestinal
Diphthong
Agglutinate
Vibrate
Please bring a copy of your work to the fifth Tuesday gathering
