“It seems to me that those songs that have been any good, I have nothing much to do with the writing of them. The words have just crawled down my sleeve and come out on the page.” ~Joan Baez
Tuesday Night at the Bookstore…
Five people gathered at Barnes and Noble. Welcome to newcomer, Ryan!
Deb read from Crossing Guard, chapter 2, part 2
In general, everyone liked the scene. Katelin liked how the tension builds and felt it with Rose. Katelin and Holly pointed out some grammar corrections with dialog (paragraph breaks, punctuation). There was some confusion about how the classroom was set up. Holly thought the conversation between Rose, Allie, and the teacher would have been a very embarrassing scene for Rose.
Holly read from Coming Up For Air, chapter 4
Katelin liked that Liza acted extreme by throwing belongings out the window and suggested showing more swings in emotion (anger, fun with revenge, tears). Jen thought if Liza is drinking the whole time, then she should act more drunk and / or hung over, especially in the beginning and during the bedroom scene. Jen and Katelin were concerned she was going to start a house fire. Maybe she gets burned? Jen thought Taylor should be angrier at Liza, and also suggested that Liza destroy something like wedding pictures with a paper shredder. Deb liked the lines about how Mike’s not going to be in her life anymore. Deb and Katelin didn’t know the word “schlock” – use a different word. Deb and Katelin liked how Faye dealt with Liza at the end – showed their friendship and how out of it Liza was. Ryan liked the concrete details, which make it substantial and real, but noticed a lack of sense description.
